Best time: Summer afternoons; spring for quieter visits
Nestled in Bradford Dale below the village of Youlgreave, the River Bradford offers one of the most family-friendly wild swimming spots in the Peak District. Originally built for sheep washing, a dammed section of the river creates a wide, lido-like pool carved from limestone, with clean, shallow water and a gentle current. The ledges along the side make it easy to get in and out, and there’s even a grassy bank perfect for picnics. It’s ideal for all ages—with shallow paddling areas upstream for toddlers and a deeper section (up to 1.5m) for confident swimmers.
The pool is just a short walk down from Main Street via Brookleton or Hollywell Lane, but parking in the village is limited, so early arrival is recommended. There are no facilities on-site, so swimmers should come prepared and take all litter home. With pubs, tearooms, and scenic walks nearby, Youlgreave makes a perfect half-day outing for those seeking a safe and scenic swim.
