Best time: Summer mornings or evenings for peace and warmth; weekdays to avoid crowds
At the meeting point of Derbyshire, Cheshire, and Staffordshire lies one of the Peak District’s most iconic wild swimming spots. Three Shires Head features two small waterfalls and plunge pools beneath a historic 18th-century packhorse bridge, surrounded by rolling hills and moorland. The water is clear and inviting, perfect for a refreshing dip or a quiet moment by the river. While the pools aren’t large enough for full swimming strokes, they’re ideal for a cool plunge on a warm day.
Access is only by foot, with several scenic walking routes leading in. For the quickest option, park in the lay-by on the A54 (coordinates: 53.219973, -1.9986102) and follow the footpath downhill—about 20 minutes each way. Alternatively, longer circular walks start from Gradbach or Wildboarclough. The terrain is uneven and can be slippery near the water, so sturdy footwear is recommended.
