Best time: Spring to early autumn, ideally early or late in the day
Tucked beneath the dramatic Headstone Viaduct, Monsal Head Weir offers a peaceful spot for wild swimming in the River Wye. This spot features a small waterfall and a deep pool in the River Wye, popular with wild swimmers and walkers. It’s one of the few places along the Monsal Trail where swimming is informally accepted, though not officially designated—so it’s best suited to confident swimmers who know their limits.
Access is via a steep footpath from Monsal Head car park, descending through woodland to the river below. The setting is photogenic and serene, especially early or late in the day when the valley is quiet. Combine it with a riverside picnic or a stop at Monsal Head Hotel for tea with a view.
