Visitors can explore the 13th century Church of St Thomas Becket, where Scottish soldiers were imprisoned during the Civil War, and stroll through the Market Place, complete with ancient stocks and a traditional cross.
It is also home to the picturesque stone cottages of Church Brow. This steep, cobbled street is described in a town brochure as “Chapel’s answer to Gold Hill in Dorset, famous for the Hovis ads.” The church bells ring out on Tuesday and Sunday, adding to the village’s quiet charm.
Nearby Eccles Pike, with its pink gritstone summit, offers breath-taking 360 degree views. Serious hikers head east from the village to the Kinder Plateau, Pennine Way, and Snake Path, while families and those preferring gentler walks can enjoy the beautiful Set Valley Trail towards New Mills.
